A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Akwa Ibom State, Otuekong John, has accused politicians opposing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid of acting out of personal vendetta rather than genuine concern for Nigeria’s development.
John, who serves as Director General of the APC Media Network, made the remarks in a statement on Sunday in Uyo titled “Northern Interest Aligned with President Tinubu’s Re-election Bid.”
He argued that Tinubu’s achievements in office have earned him a second-term mandate, warning that it would be “naïve and foolhardy” for any Northerner to contest against him in 2027.
According to him, after the North held power for eight uninterrupted years under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it is logical for Northern leaders to support Tinubu and wait until 2031 to reclaim the presidency.
John further described Tinubu’s re-election bid as “the most pragmatic path” to guaranteeing peace and sustaining Nigeria’s rotational power-sharing principle.
He also dismissed claims by some Southern politicians that a single term is enough to transform the country, calling such arguments “a ruse to mislead Nigerians.”
He maintained that history has shown that once in power, politicians often abandon such promises to pursue personal interests.
“The 2027 presidential election is shaping up to be a critical juncture in Nigeria’s democratic journey. Leadership choices must be guided by national stability, not selfish ambition,” John said.
