The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has taken delivery of four 50-seater hybrid buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and diesel, generously donated by the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI).
The handover marks a significant step forward in efforts to invigorate Abuja’s public transportation system.
The keys to the new buses were received by Chinedu Elechi, FCT Transport Secretary, who spoke on behalf of Minister Nyesom Wike.
Expressing gratitude, Elechi described the gift as “a welcome development” and emphasized its critical role in easing daily commutes across the capital.
“These buses will complement our ongoing efforts to reposition public transportation in the FCT,” he said. “They can carry more than 200 people at a time, serving those who rely on or choose public transit.” He added, “No modern city can survive without a robust public transport system.”
PCNGI’s Program Director and CEO, Michael Oluwagbemi, reinforced the significance of the donation, noting the initiative’s mandate to promote CNG and electric vehicle adoption for mass transport.
“Our goal is to drive cost savings, job creation, improved energy security, and greener transport solutions,” he explained.
Launched in 2023, the Presidential CNG Initiative is a high-profile federal program designed to fast-track the use of cleaner mobility solutions in Nigeria.
Oluwagbemi praised Abuja’s commitment to transportation infrastructure development, citing its newly built roads and terminals as backing for this gesture.
With this gift, the FCTA now has a new asset to anchor its transportation reform strategy.
As the city builds out its infrastructure, these hybrid buses are expected to lay the groundwork for a more efficient, sustainable, and inclusive transit network in the capital.
