World Trade Organisation (WTO), Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has praised President Bola Tinubu for efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking after a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa on Thursday, she said:

“We think the president and his team have worked hard to stabilise the economy. You cannot really improve an economy unless it’s stable.”

Okonjo-Iweala described Tinubu’s reforms as “in the right direction” but stressed the need to focus on growth and cushioning citizens from the impact of policy changes.

“We now need to grow the economy and put in social safety nets so that people feeling the pinch of the reforms can have some support,” she said. “How do we build these safety nets to cushion the hardship? And how do we grow the economy to create more jobs and put more money in people’s pockets?”

She added that these issues were discussed with the president but gave no further details.
