The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has dismissed reports that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has surrendered to the military.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Markus Kangye, told journalists in Abuja on Thursday, “Turji has not surrendered. We are still on the lookout for him.”
Turji, who operates in parts of Zamfara and Sokoto, has been linked to deadly raids and extortion through a harsh local tax system, where defaulters are reportedly barred from farming or rearing livestock.
Recent media claims suggested that Turji had released 32 abducted persons and handed over weapons following a peace deal brokered by Islamic clerics in Zamfara, allowing residents to resume farming.
The military, however, insists these reports are false.
