A taskforce of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) stormed a squatter settlement in Abuja on Tuesday, pulling down makeshift homes in the middle of a heavy downpour.

The operation caught residents unawares, forcing them to flee as bulldozers moved in, scrambling to rescue their belongings from the rain.

Community chairman, Stephen Obiozor, said the demolition has thrown many into homelessness and crippled their means of survival. “We are at a crossroads,” he lamented.

FCTA’s Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, said the exercise follows the directive of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to clear the city of miscreants and criminal elements. He added that the land was meant for residential development, but allottees failed to build within the given time.
