The Federal Government has unveiled the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), a ₦100 billion programme aimed at delivering clean and reliable solar power to schools, hospitals, security posts, and other public facilities nationwide.
The project, coordinated by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), in partnership with the Budget Office of the Federation, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), was formally signed off in Abuja.
REA Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, said the scheme is part of a broader plan to position Nigeria as Africa’s renewable energy hub, boost local manufacturing, and cut diesel use in government facilities.
“We are witnessing a new era of inter-agency synergy, driven by creativity, fiscal responsibility, and a shared determination to reduce the cost of governance while meeting our national energy transition goals,” he stated.
Phase one of the programme, fully funded by the Federal Government, will cost ₦100 billion.
Subsequent phases will be financed through private and blended funding from local and international investors, without sovereign guarantees or contingent liabilities.
Budget Office Director-General, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, described the initiative as critical to bridging Nigeria’s energy gap and improving efficiency in public sector operations.
InfraCorp CEO, Dr. Lazarus Angbazo, called it “a model for the future of infrastructure financing,” stressing that government alone cannot resolve the energy challenge.
MOFI Managing Director, Dr. Armstrong Takang, represented by Dr. Femi Ogunseinde, said Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuels is both costly and unsustainable, urging innovative business models that lower power costs while expanding access.
The REA, under the Ministry of Power, is tasked with delivering electricity to unserved and underserved communities to spur economic growth and improve living standards.
