Activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, remains in police custody for a second day after being detained at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

Sowore was invited by the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit over a petition alleging forgery and inciting disturbance.

He honoured the invitation, arriving with his legal team and supporters, but was detained following an interview session.

The meeting, initially slated for Monday, was rescheduled after Sowore requested a copy of the petition.

His detention comes amid heightened tensions between him and the police, following his criticisms of Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure extension and concerns about the poor welfare of retired officers.

Supporters and civil society groups have condemned the arrest, describing the charges as politically motivated and an attempt to suppress dissent.

The development is drawing increased public attention as concerns mount over freedom of expression in the country.
