The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Wednesday stirred fresh political debate after making a surprise appearance at the public presentation of two books chronicling the history and resilience of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The event, which took place at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, featured the launch of Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist and PDP and the Resilience of a Political Party, both authored by veteran journalist Mr. Ike Abonyi.
Obi, who remains a member of the Labour Party, has recently been linked to activities involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), coalition, fueling speculation about his next political move ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, as has become characteristic, he stayed silent on his political future during the event.
Prominent PDP figures in attendance included former presidential aspirant Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed (represented by Mr. Emmanuel Agbo); and former Minister of Information, Chief John Nwodo, who delivered the keynote address titled “How Did We Get Here?”
Despite the political undercurrents, sources close to the event told Tribune Online that Obi’s appearance was simply an act of friendship and loyalty to Mr. Abonyi. “It was not a political statement but a personal gesture,” one source noted.
It is worth recalling that on June 10, 2025, Mr. Abonyi had earlier launched another book titled Obi, the Political Change Agent, which focused on Peter Obi’s political philosophy and influence.
