The Nasarawa State Police Command has refuted claims that over 30 female students of the Federal University of Lafia were raped during a recent attack by suspected bandits.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, described the report as false and misleading.

He said police investigations found no evidence to support the allegations.

“That report is false. Our findings show that the story about over 30 female students being raped by bandits is not true,” Nansel said.

He disclosed that the police contacted the university’s Chief Security Officer, the institution’s information officer, and several students, none of whom confirmed any case of rape.

“We spoke with the CSO and the school’s information officer, both said there was no such report. We also interviewed some students, and they denied the incident. If something like that happened, the students would have spoken out,” he stated.

Nansel confirmed that a robbery incident occurred on July 27 in the student village area, during which a phone, power bank, and handbag were stolen from a student identified as Jennifer. A male student also sustained injuries while fleeing the scene.

“There was no report of rape, only a robbery. If such a heinous act had occurred, we wouldn’t cover it up. We are not the cause,” he added.
