The Lagos State Government has warned that borehole water in Lekki may be contaminated with untreated wastewater, posing serious health risks.

Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, issued the warning during a recent stakeholders’ meeting.

He said many residents in Lekki may unknowingly be consuming highly polluted water.

“Everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,’” he said, stressing the urgency of wastewater treatment in the area.

Adegbite noted that a proper wastewater management plan is underway, which, when completed, could curb waterborne diseases.

He also addressed Lagos’ persistent flooding challenges, despite heavy investments. Citing recent rains during the supposed August break, he said, “We still need a lot to do in that space.”
