The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has lauded the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, for championing reforms that promote human rights and the rule of law.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA described the agency’s recent actions as “a pleasantly surprising and deeply encouraging shift” under Ajayi’s leadership.
The group noted that the DSS has begun compensating victims of wrongful detention and is showing greater institutional transparency; a sharp contrast to its previously criticized practices.
“It’s rare for the human rights community to commend a security agency long linked with arbitrary detention and abuse of power,” Onwubiko said. “Ajayi’s early steps have exceeded expectations and opened new doors for engagement.”
HURIWA urged sustained reforms and called on other security agencies to emulate the DSS’s evolving approach.
