Farmers in Onu Ebonyi Inyimagu, Izzi LGA of Ebonyi State, are fleeing to higher ground as rising river levels threaten to submerge rice farms.

The swelling Ebonyi River, fueled by persistent rainfall, has stirred fears of flooding similar to previous years that wiped out large portions of farmlands.

Locals warn that this year’s rice harvest is at risk if urgent action is not taken. They are calling on the state government and agricultural agencies to dredge the riverbank and prevent another disaster.

The warning comes shortly after the state distributed wet-season inputs improved rice seeds, fertilizers, and training to farmers in Abakaliki and Ikwo LGAs.

Farmers say while the support is welcome, it could be wasted if flood control measures are not prioritized.
