Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says Labour Party’s Peter Obi is not driven by ego or desperation for power, but by a genuine desire to serve Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans programme on Monday, Adichie said Obi’s motivation to lead comes from care for the country, not personal ambition.
“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria. That’s a very important distinction,” she said.
She criticized those seeking power for self-interest, contrasting them with Obi, whom she described as humble, consistent, and service-oriented.
“Peter Obi doesn’t expect you to thank him for doing his job. To him, leadership is a responsibility, not a favour,” she added.
Adichie, who has known Obi for 15 years, said his values have remained unchanged. “He is one of the simplest men I have ever known,” she said.
She said her support for Obi is rooted in her love for Nigeria and belief that he holds himself accountable to the people rather than seeking office for self-glorification.
