The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that several northern states will experience heavier-than-usual rainfall in August, raising the risk of flash floods and riverine flooding.
According to NiMet’s Gombe Meteorological Manager, Gayus Musa, states expected to be most affected include Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, Borno, and Kebbi.
NiMet urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert, follow evacuation orders, and protect valuables in waterproof containers.
Emergency agencies and local leaders were advised to intensify public awareness and activate flood response plans.
The agency also noted that cooler nighttime temperatures may pose health risks, particularly to children. Caregivers are encouraged to keep children warm and boost their immunity with vitamin-rich foods.
Meanwhile, below-normal rainfall is expected in Taraba, southern Adamawa, and the FCT, with the Southwest likely to experience a short dry spell early in the month.
NiMet advises the public to stay informed through its official weather updates.
