The United States Embassy in Nigeria has warned that Nigerian students on F-1 visas who abandon their studies risk losing their current visas and may face difficulties obtaining US visas in the future.

In an advisory shared on its official social media handle, the embassy emphasized the importance of compliance with visa rules, particularly the requirement for students to remain enrolled in their academic programs throughout their stay in the United States.

“If you do not resume or start your program on time, your visa could be canceled. Additionally, not pursuing your studies actively while in the U.S. can affect your eligibility for future visas,” the statement read.

The embassy urged students to take their academic responsibilities seriously and to maintain active enrollment to avoid running afoul of immigration regulations.

It also encouraged visa holders to seek guidance from their designated school officials if they encounter challenges.

The warning comes amid growing concern over the misuse of student visas and increased scrutiny of international students’ compliance with U.S. immigration laws.
