Abuja-based Afropop artist Frequencie has urged the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA), and the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the alarming rise of One Chance crimes in the nation’s capital.
One Chance involves criminals posing as commercial drivers or passengers to abduct and extort unsuspecting commuters.
In a statement issued on Friday, Frequencie described the trend as a growing menace that must be curbed without delay.
He expressed concern over the increasing number of innocent residents falling victim to the criminals, who lure them with seemingly cheap transport offers only to rob or kidnap them.
Frequencie called on the FCTA, under the leadership of Minister Nyesom Wike, to strengthen the capacity of security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
He proposed the introduction of a mandatory vehicle registration system for all private car owners using their vehicles for commercial purposes in Abuja.
According to him, this measure would help track and monitor vehicles, thereby reducing the risk of criminal exploitation.
He also advocated for a more affordable and efficient mass transit system to reduce residents’ dependence on unregulated transport options often used by One Chance operators.
With many Abuja residents living in fear of being attacked or abducted, Frequencie’s appeal adds to growing calls for concrete government intervention to restore safety and public confidence in the city’s transport system.
