Leading telecom providers MTN and Airtel have generated a combined N2.5 trillion from voice and data services in the first half of 2025, reflecting Nigerians’ increasing reliance on mobile connectivity.

According to financial disclosures, MTN accounted for over N1.5 trillion, while Airtel earned nearly N1 trillion, boosted by a surge in data usage and growing call volumes nationwide.

The spike in spending is driven by rising smartphone penetration, remote work, online learning, and entertainment streaming, particularly among urban youths and professionals.

While the figures reaffirm the telecom sector’s vital role in the Nigerian economy, concerns persist about service quality and affordability.

Users frequently complain about dropped calls, slow internet, and high data charges.

Consumer advocacy groups are calling for stronger regulatory oversight to ensure better service delivery and protect subscribers.

In response, both MTN and Airtel have pledged to increase investments in network expansion and infrastructure upgrades in the months ahead.
