The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has launched a sweeping overhaul of its healthcare system under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the FCTA is undergoing a “health infrastructural revolution” from installing fully operational oxygen plants at key hospitals to establishing a specialized 20-bed Vesico-Vaginal Fistula Centre.

These efforts, bolstered by ongoing rural medical missions, have already impacted thousands of lives through free surgeries and consultations.

The FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS), has also witnessed a significant revival. After clearing billions in debts owed to healthcare providers, the scheme has tripled annual enrollment, surpassing the presidential target by 85%.

Vulnerable groups, including pregnant women and individuals with HIV/AIDS, now benefit from a specially designed free enrollment fund.

In workforce development, the FCTA has approved the recruitment of 315 new healthcare workers, settled outstanding salary arrears, and upgraded the FCT School of Nursing and Midwifery to a full-fledged college.

Residency training has improved significantly, with a 60% increase in exam pass rates.

The administration is also driving innovation in public health through a mandatory hepatitis screening initiative for food handlers and efforts to power hospitals with renewable energy, signaling a commitment to long-term sustainability in healthcare delivery.
