In a strategic move to bolster Nigeria’s defense infrastructure in the South-South region, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established a new Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Akwa Ibom State. The initiative, aimed at enhancing air operations and maritime security particularly within the Gulf of Guinea corridor was made possible through land donated by the state government.
Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff, made the announcement during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Eno in Uyo, the state capital. According to a statement issued by NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the new base will significantly boost the Air Force’s regional capabilities and contribute to national security objectives.
Air Marshal Abubakar praised the state’s support, describing the land donation as a significant investment in Nigeria’s security architecture. He emphasized that the base would not only enhance military readiness but also serve as a catalyst for commercial growth, foreign investment, and tourism in the area.
“This development will help secure lives and property, reinforce investor confidence, and position Akwa Ibom as a hub for both safety and economic opportunity,” Abubakar stated.
Governor Eno, in response, acknowledged the growing strategic importance of Akwa Ibom within Nigeria’s broader security framework. He assured the Air Force of the state’s continued partnership, stressing that peace and security remain critical foundations for any meaningful development.
“We are committed to working hand in hand with NAF, because without security, development is impossible,” the governor affirmed.
This new base underscores the federal and state government’s joint efforts to address emerging security challenges while laying the groundwork for sustainable regional growth.
