Activist Aisha Yesufu has accused President Bola Tinubu of systematically weakening Nigeria’s democratic institutions, following his decision to extend the tenure of Customs boss Bashir Adewale Adeniyi by one year.

Yesufu made the bold claim on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “We are watching Tinubu destroying every fabric of our institutions. Desecrating them!” Her statement reflects growing public concern over the perceived erosion of governance structures.

The extension, announced days ago, means Adeniyi—who officially became Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service in October 2023—will now serve until August 2026, rather than the previously expected end date of August 2025.

Critics argue the move undermines accountability and institutional independence, reinforcing fears of executive overreach under Tinubu’s administration.

Yesufu’s remarks add to a broader debate about the current government’s commitment to upholding merit-based leadership and respecting institutional boundaries.
