The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) to strictly adhere to the Electoral Act when conducting local government elections across Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the call during a courtesy visit by the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) on Tuesday in Abuja. He emphasized Sections 98 to 113 and Section 151 of the Electoral Act 2022, urging SIECs to follow proper timelines and procedures to ensure credible elections.

Yakubu criticized a recent case where a state issued only 21 days’ notice for local elections, calling it unlawful and impractical. He highlighted INEC’s own practice of releasing FCT election timetables over 360 days in advance as a model of compliance and planning.

He assured continued support for SIECs through technical assistance, training, and provision of essential election materials, stressing the importance of consistency and legal adherence.

FOSIECON Chairman, Mamman Eri, also emphasized cooperation, transparency, and the need for credible grassroots elections. He raised concerns about financial dependence of SIECs on state governments and urged INEC to advocate for their financial autonomy.

Eri also sought INEC’s guidance on aligning SIEC operations with national legislation and deploying election technology, especially in light of the Supreme Court’s nullification of local elections in Rivers State due to inadequate notice.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through credible local elections.
