Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC), Ahmed Hardawa, has died in Abuja after a brief illness.

Hardawa, who passed away on Tuesday, July 29, had just concluded his final assignment — overseeing the May 24 by-election for Chairman and Deputy Chairman in Shira Local Government Area.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, described his death as a great loss. In a condolence message through his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor called Hardawa a “distinguished statesman” and a “patriotic Nigerian.”

He noted that as BASIEC chairman, Hardawa was committed to grassroots democracy and transparent elections, earning him respect across the political space. The governor extended his sympathy to the deceased’s family, the people of Bauchi, and the electoral commission.
