Abuja is poised for a significant energy transformation as an ambitious gas pipeline project, set to primarily benefit the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding regions, has reached an astounding 86.05 percent completion. This monumental undertaking promises a new era of reliable gas supply for residents and industries in Nigeria’s capital.

Imran Ibrahim, a key figure in the project, revealed that the most critical hurdle – the daunting River Niger Crossing – has been successfully overcome. “This for us has given us a pathway. This has de-risked the project,” Ibrahim stated, emphasizing the achievement’s profound impact on the project’s trajectory and its direct implications for Abuja’s energy landscape.

Despite navigating complexities such as security threats, challenging rocky terrains, and the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus remains firmly on the timely delivery of this vital infrastructure to serve the nation’s capital. Ibrahim confirmed that mechanical completion of the pipeline, end-to-end, is ambitiously targeted for November 30, 2025.

Further underscoring its strategic importance for Abuja, the main line completion is now slated for the close of 2025. This will be swiftly followed by the operationalization of crucial ancillary infrastructure, including terminal gas stations and intermediate pigging stations, by 2026 – all meticulously designed to optimize gas distribution within and around the FCT.

Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President (EVP), Gas, Power and New Energy at the NNPC, highlighted a significant financial breakthrough. The passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has empowered NNPC to independently secure funding, mitigating previous financial constraints. “Funding was a major area of focus. It’s not so much of an issue again,” Ogunleye affirmed, emphasizing NNPC’s newfound ability to leverage money markets for bankable projects. This financial agility directly translates into a more secure and accelerated path to bringing this vital gas supply to Abuja.

This exclusive report confirms that Abuja is on the cusp of a major energy revolution, with the impending completion of this pipeline set to redefine gas accessibility and economic potential in the heart of Nigeria. The project is expected to enhance industrial growth, power generation, and improve the quality of life for residents through consistent energy supply.
