The World Bank Group is collaborating with the Nigerian Federal Government to significantly expand digital broadband access nationwide, a move aimed at accelerating growth and creating more job opportunities for the nation’s youth.
Anshula Kant, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of the World Bank Group, revealed this initiative on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, during a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
“We have a very large programme with Nigeria and are working closely with the government to deliver some projects. One of the biggest forthcoming projects will be in the digital space, providing digital broadband access across the country,” Kant stated.
Beyond digital expansion, Kant highlighted the World Bank’s ongoing support for various critical sectors in Nigeria, including agribusiness, energy, social protection, education, and health. She affirmed that the bank’s strategic priorities are in strong alignment with Nigeria’s focus on youth employment, infrastructure development, and human capital enhancement.
“Today, the World Bank Group is on a mission to eradicate poverty on a livable planet. What does that mean? Accelerated growth and better jobs for young people,” she reiterated, emphasizing the importance of an enabling environment facilitated by access to energy, digital services, improved agricultural productivity, healthcare, and education.
Kant commended President Tinubu’s administration for implementing “bold macroeconomic reforms,” noting that “positive results are already visible.”
The high-profile meeting saw the presence of key Nigerian officials, including Finance Minister Wale Edun, Communications Minister Bosun Tijani, and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila. World Bank officials Mayank Goyal and Taimur Samad were also in attendance.
