Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Rep. Adebayo Balogun, has assured that the National Assembly will amend the Electoral Act and other security laws to curb electoral irregularities ahead of the 2027 polls.

Speaking at a policy dialogue by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja, themed “Election Security and Reforms in Nigeria: Addressing Challenges in Securing Elections Ahead of 2027,” Balogun said security lapses have repeatedly disrupted voting and caused disputed results.

“We must legislate with foresight, ensuring every Nigerian can vote safely, freely and without fear,” he said, urging stakeholders to “ask the difficult questions, offer honest assessments and propose practical solutions” to strengthen democracy.

Senate Committee Chairman on National Population and Identity, Sen. Victor Umeh, stressed that credible elections are vital for Nigeria’s survival, urging INEC to deliver polls under “civilised and acceptable templates” with election officials who reject bribery and compromise.

Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Chairman, Yusuf Dantale, blamed desperate politicians for rigging, result falsification and snatching of materials, warning that “it is no longer business as usual.”

Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, called for stronger research institutions, warning that weakening them would cripple the nation. “Government must prioritise the Electoral Institute under INEC, the National Defence College, the National Judicial Institute and NILDS,” he said.
