Tension gripped Karsana community in Abuja Municipal Area Council on Monday as police officers clashed with residents protesting the demolition of their homes.
Two residents, identified as Sunday Danjuma and Jacob Audu, sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and are currently receiving treatment at the Gwagwa Health Centre.
According to the community chairman, Mr. Zakari Baba, the chaos began around 10:00 a.m. when police stationed at the community entrance prevented residents from retrieving belongings from their demolished houses.
“It was chaos. They just wanted to pick up what was left of their things,” Baba said.
The situation escalated as residents tried to access the area, prompting the police to open fire.
Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission for the FCT, Hon. Musa Dikko, confirmed the incident, stating he visited the community to calm tensions.
“I received a distress call and immediately led my team to the area. I can confirm that two natives sustained gunshot injuries.
“We’ve managed to douse the tension and summoned the developer responsible to explain who authorized the demolition,” he said.
