Dumebi Kachikwu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has claimed that Peter Obi is already considering leaving the newly formed opposition coalition led by the ADC.

Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, joined the coalition earlier in July alongside other opposition figures in a bid to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Just two days after its unveiling, Obi announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidency, though he remains a Labour Party member. Kachikwu now alleges that Obi has become disillusioned with the coalition, realizing it is being shaped to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s ambitions.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu accused the ADC leadership of tailoring the party’s structure to favor Atiku. “The entire ADC structure is being tailored for Atiku Abubakar,” he said. “It’s becoming clear to many, including Mr. Peter Obi, that this so-called coalition was never truly inclusive. It was just a political vehicle for Atiku’s 2027 campaign.”

Kachikwu noted that Obi, along with other political aspirants, is now exploring alternative platforms due to the perceived imbalance in the coalition’s direction.

He reiterated his resistance to the alleged hijacking of the ADC, pledging to continue fighting against what he described as elite political manipulation.

“The 2027 elections must not become another opportunity for class exploitation,” Kachikwu asserted. “We will continue to enlighten Nigerians about their political rights and the power they hold as citizens.”
