The President National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET), Dr. Cathrine Atteng, has made a clarion call to Ekiti State Government to set up a special commission for persons with disabilities and domesticate the National Disability Law signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Atteng, speaking at NASET’s 36th Annual Conference themed “Transformative Solutions and Inclusive Education for Learners with Disabilities”, said the commission, alongside rehabilitation centres in the state’s three senatorial districts, would unlock leadership potential and promote self-reliance among persons with disabilities.

She praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for prioritising special needs education through infrastructure investments. In recognition of his efforts, NASET conferred its Fellowship Award on Oyebanji.

Also honoured was Mr. Akinbode Olaoye for his decade-long advocacy for the visually impaired, braille literacy, curriculum reforms for special needs learners, and securing research grants.

Olaoye and other awardees reaffirmed their commitment to promoting inclusive education in Nigeria.
