Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has agreed to meet with protesting retired police officers at the Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters in Abuja, following their Monday demonstration against the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The retirees, many of them elderly, braved heavy rain as they marched to the National Assembly and the Force Headquarters, holding placards and chanting anti-government songs. Their primary demand was to be removed from what they described as an exploitative and unjust pension scheme.
Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner Ajao Adewale informed the retirees about the scheduled meeting with the IGP and assured them that their grievances would be addressed constructively.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has raised concerns over attempts by certain individuals to hijack the peaceful protest and incite confrontation.
Egbetokun reaffirmed his commitment to dialogue, emphasizing the importance of treating retirees with dignity and ensuring their well-being. The police urged all genuine stakeholders among the retirees to remain calm, law-abiding, and open to peaceful resolution efforts.
