Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, has dismissed calls to scrap the 1999 Constitution, urging instead for focused amendments to address Nigeria’s current challenges.
Speaking in an interview on Friday, Nwoko described demands for an entirely new constitution as “unrealistic,” stressing that the existing document, though flawed, remains a workable framework that can be improved through inclusive reforms.
He emphasized the importance of citizen participation in the ongoing constitutional review by the National Assembly and urged individuals and groups to submit proposals and attend public hearings.
As a member of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Nwoko said key areas under consideration include true federalism, state and local government autonomy, and electoral reforms.
“A wholesale replacement could destabilize the country,” he warned, adding, “what we need is constructive engagement, not unrealistic demands.”
The 2024 constitutional review continues nationwide, with lawmakers promising broad consultations and openness to meaningful changes.
