The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that there are no new terrorist groups operating in the country, following claims by the Turkish government about the presence of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), in Nigeria.

Turkey’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, had alleged during a dinner in Abuja that FETO operates under the guise of educational and healthcare institutions.

In response, Major General Adamu Laka, Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, urged Nigerians not to panic.

“We have no new terrorist group in Nigeria, so there’s no reason to be alarmed,” he said on Wednesday.

FETO is linked to the late Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, accused of orchestrating a failed coup in Turkey in 2016.

While Gulen-affiliated organisations exist in several countries, including Nigeria, there is no evidence of terrorist activities linked to them within Nigeria.
