Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sparking a wave of political reactions and uncertainty within Nigeria’s opposition ranks.
According to sources, Atiku submitted his resignation to the PDP National Working Committee in Abuja on July 14, though news of the move only surfaced on July 16.
He allegedly cited internal divisions, lack of internal democracy, and unresolved conflicts with key stakeholders.
The development has drawn mixed reactions. While some PDP members see it as a major blow ahead of the 2027 elections, others view it as a chance for internal renewal.
Atiku, PDP’s presidential flagbearer in 2019 and 2023, has yet to speak publicly, but his media team suggests an address is imminent.
Meanwhile, speculation is growing over whether he will join another party or float a new political movement.
The PDP leadership has remained silent, saying only that consultations are underway.
