Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a shift away from the party’s founding ideals.

In a resignation letter, Atiku said he could no longer align himself with the PDP’s current direction, though he expressed gratitude for the platform it had given him over the years.

A founding member of the party and two-time presidential candidate, Atiku described his exit as “heartbreaking,” adding that the decision was made after deep reflection.

His departure comes as the 2026 general elections draw closer, sending ripples across the political landscape.

The PDP has not yet issued a formal reaction, but Atiku’s resignation is already fueling speculation about his next political move, whether he plans to support a new platform or retire from active politics altogether.

Observers believe his exit could trigger major realignments, especially in northern Nigeria, where he maintains a strong support base and longstanding influence.
