An unidentified man was lynched by an angry mob on Monday night in the Unguwar Shadadi area of Kuje Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, for allegedly attempting to steal a motorcycle from a mosque.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred while Muslim worshippers were observing Isha’i prayers.
The suspect was said to have blended into the congregation but quietly slipped out and tried to steal a parked motorcycle.
Usman Ibrahim, a resident, said a vigilant worshipper became suspicious of the suspect’s movement near the motorcycle and raised the alarm.
“It was the alarm that made some young men go after him. They caught him before he could escape, and before anyone could intervene, they had already lynched him,” Ibrahim explained.
Suleiman Yakubu, a member of the local vigilante group, confirmed the incident, noting that the mob acted before the vigilantes could respond.
“By the time we received the information and mobilized to the scene, the suspect was already dead,” Yakubu said.
The police have not confirmed any formal report regarding the incident, and the identity of the deceased remains unknown as of press time.
