Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has described President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Nyesom Wike as FCT Minister as a major political blunder.

Speaking in a recent interview, Kingibe said the President erred by choosing someone from outside the North for a role traditionally occupied by northern politicians.

While she acknowledged that the region of origin should not matter in principle, she insisted Wike’s leadership style has caused more harm than good.

“This was one of President Tinubu’s biggest mistakes,” Kingibe said. “It’s the first time an FCT Minister is coming from outside the North, and though that’s not the issue, the way he has handled the office is where the problem lies.”

She accused Wike of running the FCT with a “military-style” approach, citing his demolition campaigns, disregard for elected officials, and focus on politically driven projects.

“This is not Port Harcourt,” she said, referencing Wike’s past as Governor of Rivers State. “Abuja deserves inclusive governance and respect for its unique status.”

Kingibe’s comments reflect growing dissatisfaction among some FCT stakeholders over Wike’s policies and style.

As tensions rise over governance, representation, and rising living costs in Abuja, the Minister’s role remains under public scrutiny.
