The United States President, Donald Trump was met with loud boos and jeers just moments after Chelsea claimed a historic 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday night.
The incident unfolded at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Trump, seated alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, took to the field for the trophy presentation.
While Chelsea players celebrated their dominant performance, the atmosphere briefly turned sour as sections of the 80,000-strong crowd erupted into boos when Trump appeared on the jumbotron during the U.S. national anthem and again when he joined the podium.
Efforts by stadium officials to drown out the noise with loud music did little to mask the crowd’s reaction.
“I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t expect him to be on the stand during the trophy lift,” said Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s hero of the night, who scored twice and provided an assist in the first half. “I was a bit confused.”
Palmer’s brilliance helped Chelsea secure their second Club World Cup title, and their first under new head coach Enzo Maresca.
The 22-year-old praised Maresca’s tactical genius, which saw Chelsea press PSG relentlessly and capitalize on every opportunity.
“The gaffer put a great game plan out. He knew where the space would be and freed me up to attack,” Palmer said. “It’s a great feeling, especially because so many doubted us.”
Maresca, in his first season in charge, has now led Chelsea to three major milestones, Champions League qualification, a UEFA Conference League title, and now the Club World Cup crown. Speaking after the match, the Italian tactician said: “We won the game in the first ten minutes. The boys executed the plan perfectly.”
But while Chelsea lifted the trophy amid confetti and cheers, Trump’s presence remained a point of controversy. His front-and-center appearance during the celebrations stirred mixed reactions, especially as the event also marked the anniversary of an assassination attempt on his life the previous year.
Trump remained unfazed, standing alongside Chelsea players and Infantino, even as the crowd’s divided sentiment underscored his polarizing role in public life.
Security was tight around the stadium, with the U.S. Secret Service and TSA on high alert throughout the evening due to Trump’s attendance. Outside, fans navigated bag checks and a heavy police presence.
Meanwhile, PSG’s frustration boiled over in the closing moments of the match. João Neves received a red card for violent conduct, and manager Luis Enrique is under scrutiny for appearing to push Chelsea’s João Pedro during a post-match melee. Enrique later claimed he was attempting to separate players.
As Chelsea basks in global glory, the final will be remembered not just for their thrilling football, but also for a politically charged sideshow that added unexpected drama to the night.
