The Super Falcons of Nigeria have booked a place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), after a goalless draw with Algeria in their final Group B match in Morocco.
Despite the 0-0 scoreline, the Falcons finished top of their group with seven points and will now face Zambia, who placed second in Group C, in what promises to be a thrilling quarterfinal clash.
Algeria delivered a disciplined defensive display, frustrating the Nigerian attack led by Francisca Ordega, Ifeoma Onumonu, and Jennifer Echegini.
Algerian goalkeeper Chloe N’Gazi was in fine form, making several crucial saves to keep the Super Falcons at bay.
While Nigeria struggled in front of goal, they continued to show impressive form overall, combining solid defense with attacking intent throughout the tournament.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie kept her second consecutive clean sheet, while forward Chinwendu Ihezuo’s performances have underscored Nigeria’s squad depth.
The upcoming quarterfinal against Zambia is a rematch of the 2022 WAFCON bronze medal playoff, which Nigeria won.
With both teams chasing a semifinal berth, the encounter is expected to be fiercely contested.
Algeria exits the group stage with their heads held high, having shown marked improvement, especially in defense, led by captain Naïma Bouhani and playmaker Lina Boussaha.
As the Super Falcons prepare for the knockout round, focus now shifts to sharpening their attack and sustaining their championship push.
