The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London at the age of 82.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the government following President Bola Tinubu’s approval.

In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government said the holiday is a tribute to Buhari’s selfless service, enduring contributions to national development, and efforts in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.

“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

He urged citizens to commemorate the day by promoting peace, unity, and patriotism in line with Buhari’s vision for the country.

The government also reminded the public that national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day national mourning period, which commenced on Sunday.

Condolences were extended to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, with prayers for the peaceful repose of the late president’s soul.
