Former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest today, July 14, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in line with Islamic burial rites.
Buhari died on Sunday in London at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed by the presidency, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across Nigeria and the international community.
His remains arrived in Nigeria earlier today, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top government officials. Security was tight as the body was transported to Daura for burial.
The funeral was attended by prominent political figures, religious leaders, and dignitaries. Buhari, a former military Head of State (1983–1985) and democratically elected President (2015–2023), was widely regarded for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to reform public institutions.
Daura, his ancestral home, was enveloped in mourning. Markets were shut, and black banners adorned public buildings in a show of respect.
Buhari’s legacy remains deeply felt, praised, critiqued by others but his influence on Nigeria’s political landscape is indelible.
