President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., after a prolonged illness.
In a statement issued from the State House, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow and extended his condolences to the Buhari family, following a personal conversation with the late President’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari.
As a mark of national mourning, President Tinubu has ordered that flags fly at half-mast across the country.
He also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to escort the late former president’s body back to Nigeria.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, previously ruled as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
Details of funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
