The Imo State Government has announced a ban on open grazing within the Owerri Capital Territory, effective July 24, 2025.
Commissioner for Livestock Development, Anthony Mgbeahurike, disclosed the directive during a meeting with cattle herders and dealers in the state capital.
He said the decision aims to promote order, protect farmlands, and improve urban living conditions.
Mgbeahurike emphasized Governor Hope Uzodinma’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, noting the administration’s consistent support to the herding community, including free anthrax vaccinations for cattle.
He decried recent cases of uncontrolled grazing that disrupted daily life and urged herders to respect local farmers and compensate for any damages.
The newly appointed leader of the cattle herders in Imo, Alhaji Shuaibu, pledged compliance with the directive and praised the government’s inclusive approach.
“We are committed to a peaceful and cleaner Imo State,” he said.
