The Federal Government has strongly criticized the United States over its new visa restrictions on Nigerians, describing the move as “unfair and disproportionate.”
In a statement on Wednesday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the decision undermines the long-standing cordial relations between both countries.
The U.S. had announced a reduction in the validity of certain non-immigrant visas, such as B1/B2 (business/tourism), F (students), and J (exchange visitors), limiting them to three months with a single entry.
Ebienfa said the policy could negatively impact Nigerian students, professionals, and families, while weakening vital educational and cultural ties.
“While every country has the sovereign right to shape its immigration policies, Nigeria urges the U.S. to reconsider this decision in the spirit of mutual respect and global cooperation,” he stated.
He added that diplomatic discussions are ongoing, and Nigeria remains committed to a constructive resolution.
