A suspected diphtheria outbreak in Zaria, Kaduna State, has claimed the lives of three children and infected six others.

Dr. Bello Jamoh, Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Board, confirmed the outbreak has persisted since October 2024.

He said the State Ministry of Health is leading the response, with support from partners and health stakeholders.

A resident of Kwarbai, Malam Bashir-Magaji Basharata, who lost his daughter to the disease, said it is spreading rapidly.

His daughter developed a swollen neck and breathing difficulties before passing away at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika.

Following his report to the local council, a medical team visited the area and began vaccinations.

Four other children showing symptoms were admitted at Kakaki Primary Health Care Clinic, with only one discharged so far.

Basharata expressed concern over vaccine scarcity in the state, claiming officials sourced doses from neighbouring Niger Republic.
