A man was severely burned with hot oil after being accused of stealing from a shop in the Mushin area of Lagos on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect was caught allegedly stealing cash and goods from a local grocery store when an angry mob descended on him.
The violence escalated when a trader reportedly poured boiling oil on him, causing extensive burns.
Viral videos show the man screaming in pain as some bystanders watched and others cheered.
The Lagos State Police Command has condemned the attack as a clear case of jungle justice.
Spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin warned that taking the law into one’s hands is criminal and vowed that those responsible would be prosecuted.
“No one has the right to pour hot oil on another human being. Theft allegations must be reported to the police,” he said.
The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was rescued by police and is receiving treatment at a hospital.
The police have launched an investigation and urged the public to provide information to help apprehend the culprits.
