Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have suspended their strike, which began on March 24, 2025, and will return to classrooms on Wednesday, July 9.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT chapter, announced the decision in a communiqué issued on July 4 after its State Wing Executive Council (SWEC), meeting.
The strike was over unpaid salary arrears and the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage.
The suspension followed a stakeholders’ meeting convened by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who pledged to release N16 billion and allocate 10% of the Area Councils’ internally generated revenue to offset teachers’ outstanding payments.
The NUT said the government’s commitment, along with the payment of five months’ arrears into teachers’ accounts by July 8, led to the strike’s suspension.
The union thanked stakeholders who supported their cause and promised to continue advocating for full settlement of all entitlements.
