The ancient city of Ibadan is in mourning following the death of its revered monarch, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away at the age of 90.
In a show of solidarity and sorrow, the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council, Mai-Martaba Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has extended heartfelt condolences, describing the loss as a significant blow to Ibadan and the wider Yoruba nation.
The news of Oba Olakulehin’s passing on Monday reverberated across Nigeria’s traditional institutions, drawing emotional tributes from far and wide.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Dr. Abdulazeez Arowona, the Emir of Ilorin described the monarch’s death as “the unquestionable will of Almighty Allah,” underscoring the inevitability of life’s divine journey.
Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne in March 2024 following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun.
Though his reign lasted just over a year, it was marked by peace, dignity, and a deep commitment to preserving Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage.
He was widely respected for his quiet wisdom and his efforts to foster unity within the Olubadan-in-Council, ensuring a smooth continuation of traditional leadership.
Despite the brevity of his reign, Oba Olakulehin provided stability and direction for the people of Ibadan and Oyo State.
While his tenure may not have featured widely publicized initiatives, his leadership was valued for its calm presence and firm support for age-old customs and traditions.
Emir Sulu-Gambari, who has spent over 35 years on the throne in Ilorin, acknowledged the importance of Oba Olakulehin’s contributions.
“His Majesty’s time on the throne, though brief, was undeniably peaceful and immensely valuable,” he stated. “He worked diligently to sustain the cultural heritage and traditions cherished by the people of Ibadan and Oyo State.”
The Emir also extended his condolences to the late monarch’s family, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Council of Traditional Rulers, the government, and the people of Oyo State.
He acknowledged the profound sorrow that has enveloped Ibadan in the wake of the monarch’s demise.
As the people of Ibadan prepare to bid farewell to their departed king, the Emir concluded with a solemn prayer for the repose of Oba Olakulehin’s soul and for strength for the people of Ibadanland and humanity at large to bear this painful loss.
The passing of Oba Olakulehin marks not just the end of a reign, but the departure of a custodian of tradition; one whose legacy of service and peace will not be forgotten.
