The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has lashed out at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of being rattled by the emergence of a new opposition coalition gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike had on Thursday dismissed the coalition as a gathering of “failed politicians” during a media chat.

However, the ADC swiftly responded, saying the minister’s comments reflect fear over the growing strength of the alliance.

In a statement by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said: “Minister Wike could only descend to that level because of his mortal fear of the threat that the successful unveiling of the coalition of opposition political parties constitutes to the government that he serves.”

The ADC is the platform for a newly formed coalition that includes prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, Aminu Tambuwal, Solomon Dalung, Dele Momodu, and others.

Abdullahi criticized Wike and the ruling APC for failing to address pressing national issues, including the ongoing strike by FCT primary school teachers.

“We are aggrieved to see children of the poor unable to get an education because he would not pay their teachers’ salaries, yet he is busy commissioning multi-billion-naira projects,” he said.

He also accused Wike of contributing to the downfall of the PDP, the party under which he rose to prominence.

“It is rather too late in the day to cry. The coalition movement belongs to the Nigerian people, who were promised renewed hope but have received renewed hopelessness,” Abdullahi added.

The ADC maintained that if Wike and the APC had fulfilled their campaign promises, there would be no need to fear any coalition.
