Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident in Spain.

The 28-year-old football star was involved in a fatal crash on the A-52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora province, when his vehicle veered off the road and caught fire.

Jota was traveling with his 26-year-old brother, André Silva, a professional footballer for Portuguese club Penafiel. Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The severity of the crash and the subsequent fire initially made identification difficult.

The devastating news has sent shockwaves throughout the global football community.

Tributes from fans, teammates, and clubs have poured in, mourning the sudden loss of a beloved and talented player.

Jota had only recently married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, 2025. The couple shared three children.

Liverpool FC and the Portuguese Football Federation have yet to release official statements, but messages of condolence have flooded social media platforms.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s squad.

Over his time at Anfield, he made 182 appearances, scored 65 goals, and contributed 26 assists.

On the international stage, he was a key figure for Portugal, representing the country in multiple major tournaments.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is currently underway in Spain.

The football world remains united in grief over the heartbreaking loss of a rising star taken too soon.
