Portugal national team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of his teammate, Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain.

Jota, a 28-year-old forward for Liverpool, and his 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, also a footballer, lost their lives in the crash that occurred on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province.

Ronaldo and Jota had recently featured together for Portugal, helping the team clinch the UEFA Nations League title for a second time after a dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Spain.

Jota had come off the bench in the second half of extra time.

Reacting to the news, Ronaldo shared an emotional tribute via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, writing: “It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together. You had only just got married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you’ll always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We’ll all miss you.”

The football world has been plunged into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across clubs and countries.
