The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), has sealed off the flood-prone slip road connecting Goodluck Jonathan Expressway to Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange in Abuja to prevent potential disaster.
The move, taken on Tuesday, comes as rising water levels along the stretch have raised serious safety concerns. Acting Director-General of FEMD, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, confirmed the development, describing it as a precautionary measure aimed at saving lives and property during the rainy season.
“This closure is necessary to avoid tragedy,” Mohammed said, recalling the 2019 incident when Mr. Tony Okecheme, a director at the FCT High Court, drowned on the same flooded road.
He warned that the current water buildup poses a grave danger to motorists and urged residents to comply with the temporary closure by using alternative routes.
“We appeal to the public not to attempt driving through flooded roads,” he added.
Mohammed also encouraged residents to report emergencies via the toll-free number 112 and reiterated the department’s readiness to respond swiftly throughout the rainy season.
He called on Abuja residents to remain alert and prioritize safety as heavy rains continue.
